The background features an abstract black pattern with flowing purple lines. The title “Under The Lights” appears at the bottom of the cartridge image in elegant script.]
Do you want “that” feeling of summer? You know, the one you’ve seen a hundred times in those big-screen montages – a group of young, fresh-faced people driving down the road with the windows down, blasting music? Then this the track for you, trust me.
Under The Lights is the second track released by Yorkshire Duo Daniel Fox and Chris Brayshaw aka Skyracer, and is a “love song set in New York City, capturing the thrill of new romance and the moment it just ‘clicks'”. Huge thanks to Pete at Ambicon Music for dropping this gem in the Captainskydiver inbox!
As a former emo (I use the word former VERY loosely) and a millennial, this track is right up my street. Listening to it takes me back to those carefree summers as a teen, sitting in a park somewhere with my mates, a bottle of Strongbow, and a Sony Ericsson phone blasting our favourite songs (those were elite phones in my opinion). Although you can certainly hear those influcences bands like Boys Like Girls and Busted (two of my favourite bands back then), Skyracer have managed to emulate that and add their own unique twist, making it owl-mazing (you can blame Hamish for that pun).
It has all the components of a track that really slaps (that is what the kids are saying these days, right?). From the slowly building synths at the start, to the epic drum beats that kick in out of nowhere, and the soaring guitar riffs that follow. Not to mention the vocals, which seem to fly through the speakers at speed, filling the room with warmth. A particular favourite moment is from 2:25, when everything just slows down. The kind of moment that makes you close your eyes and twirl around the room, it’s that 40 seconds where you can really FEEL the music, then, just as you’re lost in it, they bring it right back home and finish strong.”
As a rule, we shy away from rating songs (be it stars, numbers, or whatever other obscure things people come up with), but Hamish would very much like to give this two wings up.
