neverfine – Imaginary Friends

Time for the third review of this year’s Captainskydiver Advent Calendar.
You’re probably on your 3647th Christmas Party and getting excited for Santa (or Sandra as we call them in our family – that’s a long story) coming in just one week!

For now, it’s time to delve into my (possible) words of wisdom on another track that Hamish and I totally dig. Up today we have “Imaginary Friends” by the fabulous neverfine!

Imaginary Friends is Track 3 of neverfine’s debut EP “Do Everything, Feel Nothing”, and was the second single to be released, after their debut single “Silhouettes” (which is also a banger!).
In fact, the whole EP is smashing, but that’s probably a story for a different post!

First of all, I guess I’d better give you a wee background into neverfine! neverfine (yes it’s not capitalised, I haven’t made some sort of fatal copy error – in case anyone from the copy team at work is reading this) are a three-piece alternative synth-pop group hailing from Glasgow, and we love them! These three fab humans are: vocalist Ashley Palkowski, multi-instrumentalist Craig Kelly, and keyboardist Jess Blinkhorn.

Right, back to it! You’re here to hear about what I think about the track! Simply put, it’s an amazing piece of musical wizardry! This track is written from the perspective of someone’s mental health deteriorating, almost as if they are losing their sense of reality, which is cleverly done with Alice in Wonderland references throughout the track. The alternative synth-pop style, mixed with Ashley’s beautiful voice, results in a unique and mesmerizing sound. As well as the Alice in Wonderland references, the band have also hidden (brilliantly) some more wee Easter Eggs for us throughout! I mean, who doesn’t love an Easter Egg? These include Deadmau5 and Nine Inch Nails – can you spot them all? ).

In short – this track is bloody brilliant and you need to IMMEDIATELY go and listen to it! But, before I go any further, some important information! neverfine have a two live dates coming up at the time of this review going live, both at King Tuts in Glasgow.
